Barely 20% of the plastic that we throw away in Sweden gets recycled. The remaining 80 % gets deposited on various dumps and some of it gets burnt up. Unfortunately, ends some of it in the wild and in the sea. It takes about 10-20 years for plastic to break down in the nature. Nowadays, we have a few different methods of producing fossil fuels free plastic, it is also possible to recycle most types of plastic.
Sustainable consumption
What we mean with sustainable consumption, is staying within the boundaries of the planet and not getting rid of more than what we have. An average Swede uses about 11 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. It doesn’t sounds like much if you compare with other countries, yet it still is 10 times more than what is sustainable for the planet. If we want to be able to meet the Paris Agreement's goals, we must reduce to 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year by 2030. In order to achieve these goals, we must stop using finite resources and start using renewables, as well as use the public transportation more.
Renewable raw materials
Renewable raw materials are something that has long been debated and it is something that we will have to use more and more over time. We currently use several different types of renewable raw materials as substitutes for fossil raw materials for various products such as maize and wood.
Renewable raw materials
The problem with fossil raw materials is that they are difficult to replace and this is partly due to their properties and their price. There are currently several raw materials which are not fossil and which can replace the fossils but, fossil raw materials are easy to obtain and transport around as there are so many companies and countries that deal with it, for example biofuels which is a fuel that can replace gasoline and diesel. Biofuels are more difficult to obtain because there are not as many companies and countries investing in biofuel production, and this is mostly due to the high cost and because there is another fuel that is taking over the fuel industry. Electricity is something that has become popular to drive vehicles on, and it is largely thanks to vehicle manufacturer Tesla, which is at the forefront when it comes to the development and manufacture of electric vehicles.
